Compete, an independent tennis company providing players with professionally organised and properly run, enjoyable tennis competitions. Whether you’re a serious or a recreational mini tennis player, junior development player, junior performance player or an adult, Compete offers you the chance to enter the best type of event to help improve your LTA rating and/or LTA national ranking.

Compete works in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and a few select indoor tennis centres, predominantly in the Bristol and Bath area of the South West. We provide events that are appropriate for a player’s needs and wishes, be that fun or seriously competitive.

Compete was set up by Chris Matthews, a highly respected referee and tournament organiser with over 40 years experience of tennis officiating and organisation. Chris joined the British Tennis Umpires Association in 1982 (now the Association of British Tennis Officials) whilst still serving in the Royal Navy as a Physical Training Instructor. He officiated at his first Wimbledon in 1984 (initially as a linesman), gained an I.T.F. international badge in 1990 and has since worked at tournaments both home and abroad.

After 23 years in the RN and two years tennis officiating full-time, he joined TeamBath in 1997 as their first Tennis Development Manager in the state-of-the-art facilities at the University of Bath. For the next twelve years, Chris organised over 40 tournaments a year there and administered every LTA tournament from international events to Junior Indoor Series, something he still does today on behalf of TeamBath (one of just four UK International High Performance Centres) and the LTA.

No more than a reasonable club player himself, his experiences at local, regional, national and international events have made Chris understand and respect the requirements of the players for fairness, professionalism and good organisation. Attributes that he employs in all his tournaments.

We trust you will find a suitable competition for you or your child to enter in the coming weeks. Just click on the ‘Tournament’ link above to find what’s currently available to enter. Additional events are always being added. Feedback as well as suggestions are always welcome by clicking here.

We look forward to meeting you at some of our tournaments.
